November 2016: ECONADAPT at Marrakesh COP

The ECONADAPT project was represented at the COP22 Meeting in Marrakesh, where results of the project were presented.

Alistair Hunt and Reinhard gave talks in a session on Climate Change and Finance in the EU Pavilion, whilst Michalis Skourtos and Areti Kontogianni provided technical support to the Greek Delegation.

 

 

 

September 2016: Policy Workshop, Brussels

The final policy workshop of the ECONADAPT project was held in Brussels on 27-28th September 2016. Attendees included representatives from DG CLIMA, DG AGRI, DG Research, EIB, OECD, national governments and researchers from a range of EU research projects.

The workshop showcased recent experience in the economics of adaptation, identified further policy needs as well as future research priorities.

May 2016: Project Meeting, Athens

The project team met to discuss in detail the content for the new web-based toolbox for economic assessment of adaptation; how to orientate the site for different users and how the different elements of the resource bank should be made available.

March 2016: Rwanda field visit

Four consortium team members visited Rwanda as part of the case study work on the economics of international adaptation finance. The Rwanda country study focuses on the economic appraisal of adaptation strategies for tea and coffee production, both of which are sensitive to changing climatic conditions in the region. One of a series of visits, this visit consisted of a series of meetings with government representatives, tea producer co-operatives and coffee producers.

March 2016: Project Meeting, Oxford

ECONADAPT team members met to discuss progress on the project, in particular the development of the toolbox for economic assessment of adaptation; a key outcome for this project.

January/ February 2016: Making the case for adaptation in Zanzibar

Researchers from the ECONADAPT project met with government officials (in multiple departments) and other policy makers to discuss the ECONADAPT project work on the development of a National Climate Change Action Plan for Zanzibar. The research is helping to appraise a costed action plan for the archipelago, a small, low-lying developing island that is highly vulnerable to climate change and thus a priority for international climate finance. Activities included consultation meetings and workshops.

July 2015: Our Common Future under Climate Change Scientific Conference, Paris

Presenting at a joint session hosted by the OECD and the ECONADAPT project, members of the research consortium presented the latest findings on the cost and benefits of adaptation in developing countries, drawing on a major review and synthesis on the costs and benefits of adaptation in developing countries (WP1/9), undertaken by the project (Paul Watkiss, Alistair Hunt, Jenny Troeltzsch, Josselin Rouillard and Manuel Lago).

June 2015: Policy workshop with agricultural stakeholders, Brussels.

The workshop was titled: “The Common Agricultural Policy and adaptation to climate change in Europe” and was led by Waginengen University. The workshop brought together a range of key stakeholders and policy makers to discuss detailed scenarios exploring the effects of climate change on European agriculture, to co-examine the current performance of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and to explore the ways in which the CAP can be improved to better facilitate adaptation to climate change.

May 2015: Joint policy sessions at the European Climate Change Adaptation (ECCA2015) Conference in Copenhagen with the OECD

ECONADAPT team members co-hosted two sessions. The first – with OECD - was on “Adapting to a Changing Climate: The Role for Economic Analysis in Policy” and included an updated presentation (Paul Watkiss) on the review on the Cost and Benefits of Adaptation: Evidence, Lessons and Policy Insights in OECD countries (WP1). A second joint session was run with other FP7 projects – ENHANCE and STAR-FLOOD – on Managing flood risk in the EU (linked to WP5 and 6). Dr Alistair Hunt’s talk was titled “The Economics of Adaptation to Climate Change.

July 2014: Policy Meetings, Brussels

ECONADAPT partners Alistair Hunt and Paul Watkiss met with representatives from ECDG DEVCO and the JASPERS team to provide an update on the case studies on International Development Assistance and on Economic Project Appraisal, respectively.

June 2014: ECONADAPT Joint Policy Workshop with the OECD

ECONADAPT held its first policy workshop on Adaptation Financing and Implementation: Putting Priorities into Practice in OECD Countries in collaboration with the OECD, at a meeting at the OECD Conference Centre in Paris on the 18-19 June 2014. The workshop included presentations from a range of speakers, including national and local policy makers, the private sector and researchers, and involved around 50 international participants.

March 2014: Policy Meeting, Brussels

ECONADAPT partners Alistair Hunt and Paul Watkiss gave a policy update to members of ECDG Research and ENV, outlining the scope of the project and its intended outputs. Interactions with the policy community in the EC was planned out.

March 2014: Adaptation Frontiers - CIRCLE 2 Conference, Lisbon, Portugal

ECONADAPT partners presented at two parallel sessions on Uncertainty and Decision Making and Transition, Societal Transformation, Ethics, Values and Equity. Paul Watkiss gave a presentation on “Low and no-regret adaptation”, exploring the question “What do we know about options, transferability, uncertainty and economic appraisal from recent research, policy and practice?”

Alistair Hunt (University of Bath) and Julia Ferguson (Cranfield University) presented on “Equity and economic analysis in the determination of climate change adaptation”.

October 2013: Initial Project Meeting, Bath

ECONADAPT project coordinator Alistair Hunt welcomed and introduced the project participants, outlining the general goals of the ECONADAPT project and the Description of Work. The European Commission’s Scientific Officer provided a message (via Skype). Work Package leaders gave a short overview on the goals, milestones and deliverables for each area.
